LUCENA CITY – Three persons were killed and eight others were injured when two cargo trucks collided head on along the Maharlika Highway in Atimonan, Quezon early Tuesday, police said.
Chief Inspector Alvin Ruby Consolacion, Atimonan police chief, said the cargo trucks were traveling in the village of Tagbakin at around 3:30 a.m. when one of the vehicles, an Isuzu Forward truck (ULD-151) bound for Naga City and loaded with vegetables, moved into the opposite lane and crashed into a Hino aluminum 10-wheeler closed van (TEX-482) bound for Pasig in Metro Manila.
“Based on our initial investigation, the driver of the Bicol-bound truck was probably sleepy,” the police said over the phone.
Three passengers of the Isuzu truck – Manuel Cleofe, 39, truck driver; Michael Bonador, 35; and one alias “Boboy” – were all declared dead on arrival at the hospital, Consolacion said.
Police identified the injured as Sonny Cangayo, Marijoy Nebria, Benigno Sanelo, all passengers of Naga-bound truck; and Rey Quinonez, Froilan Ventolina, Gener Gatmaitan, Johnny Doverte and Jeffrey Doverte, passengers of Pasig-bound vehicle.
The injured, most of them in critical condition due to injuries in different parts of the body, were rushed to the nearest hospital in Atimonan, police said.
Members of the communication group Atimonan-Kabalikat Civicom and several volunteer groups rushed to the accident site and helped rescue the victims.
Data from the Highway Patrol Group showed that a total of 6,845 accidents had been recorded across the country from January to July.
At least 2,161 of the road accidents were caused by overspeeding – 1,971 cases due to mistimed overtaking; and 1,732 cases due to bad turning.
“Human error factor” posted the highest index among the causes of road accidents, according to HPG data.
