Motorists coming from Bicol and Manila were stranded in Atimonan, Quezon after typhoon “Santi” (international codename: Mirinae) caused flooding along the Maharlika Highway, police said Saturday.

Chief Inspector Alvin Ruby Consolacion, Atimonan police chief, said motorists have been left in the roadside villages of San Isidro, Malinao, Tinandog and Tagbakin since 2:00 a.m. after the Maling River overflowed and spilled into the highway making it impassable.

“The river swells due to strong rains and high tide from the Lamon Bay,” Consolacion said over the phone Saturday morning.

He said the police detachments in nearby Gumaca and Pagbilao towns have been advising motorists coming from Bicol and Manila to changed routes and use the Miguel Suarez Highway in the Bondoc Peninsula instead to avoid the flooded area.

The police official said village officials and watchmen have been assisting the lawmen in providing help and support to the stranded motorists.

“The flood is starting to subside. We will again open the highway once it is safe to traverse,” Consolacion said.

He said several houses along the highway were also damaged by the flooding.

“So far, we have yet to receive report of any casualties. I was told that the residents in the area have long been used to river swelling during typhoon. They immediately evacuated to safer grounds at the first sign,” the police official said. (Delfin T. Mallari Jr. Inquirer Southern Luzon)
